NELLIE E. POOLER CHAPMAN (1847–1906)

FIRST WOMAN DENTIST IN CALIFORNIA

Nellie E. Pooler Chapman truly learned by practicing. Without any formal education, she became a dentist under the guidance of her husband, Allen Chapman. After they married in Nevada City, California, Dr. Chapman trained his wife to become his assistant. When she was just at the tender age of fourteen, he taught her how to use the dental tools and help with the patients. She was a competent young woman and learned quickly. With her dainty hands and calm manner, she easily won the confidence of the patients, many of them miners drawn to the West during the gold rush. It was quite a contrast to see these brawny and weatherworn men sitting in a big red velvet chair being helped by a smartly dressed petite woman with her “modern” dental equipment.
